Located 40 kilometres north of Moranbah in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, Centurion Mine is an underground operation preparing to resume longwall operations in early 2026.
Peabody has been part of the region for the better part of 20 years and has been operating globally for more than 140 years with a presence in Australia dating back six decades.
Centurion Mine is planning to extend the life of its operations by over 25 years by developing to the north of the existing mining complex – all within our existing mining leases.
Our future plans for Centurion will provide jobs and generate royalty payments that help fund essential services and infrastructure across Queensland, while unlocking valuable gas reserves in coal seams to benefit regional businesses.
The northern development will provide access to the highest-grade steelmaking coal for global markets – a key ingredient for the steel that builds modern cities and the renewable energy infrastructure driving the transition to a low carbon future.
Centurion Mine is committed to protecting the environmental values of the region through comprehensive plans that monitor groundwater, minimise emissions and enhance underground safety.
Our greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement plan will reduce fugitive emissions by extracting coal seam gas before and during mining. The methane will be repurposed for more sustainable uses, including powering our operations and boosting regional gas supply.
Centurion takes a proactive approach to groundwater protection – using predictive modelling and regular monitoring to safeguard local water quality.
