Advancing the Future of Steelmaking

Centurion Mine delivers premium steelmaking coal to global markets

Who We Are

Located 40 kilometres north of Moranbah in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, Peabody’s Centurion Mine is an underground operation preparing to resume longwall operations in early 2026.

Peabody has owned and operated the mine for more than 20 years and has more than 140 years of global mining experience including six decades in Australia.

Our Future Plans

Centurion Mine is seeking approval to extend its operations by more than 25 years through development to the north of the current mining complex – all within existing leases.

Our future plans for Centurion will provide jobs and generate royalty payments that help fund essential services and infrastructure across Queensland, while also unlocking valuable gas reserves in coal seams that will benefit regional Queensland.

The northern development will deliver access to more than 100 million tonnes of the world’s premium steelmaking coal for global markets – a key ingredient for the steel that builds modern cities and the renewable energy infrastructure necessary for a low carbon future.

Sustainability

Centurion Mine is committed to protecting the environmental values of the region through comprehensive plans that monitor groundwater, minimise emissions and enhance underground safety.

Our greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement plan will reduce fugitive emissions by extracting coal seam gas before and during mining. The methane will be repurposed for more sustainable uses, including powering our operations and boosting regional gas supply.

Centurion takes a proactive approach to groundwater protection – using predictive modelling and regular monitoring to safeguard local water quality.
