Continuing to mine at Centurion will provide jobs, royalties and the highest-grade steelmaking coal to global markets.
Centurion Mine is preparing for the next stage of mine life by lodging plans with the Queensland Government to develop to the north of the existing complex.
The northern development will add more than 25 years to Centurion’s mine life, providing jobs, royalty payments and the continued supply of the highest grade steelmaking coal to global markets.
Steelmaking coal is essential for producing the steel that builds the critical infrastructure we rely on every day – from homes and transport networks to hospitals and renewable energy infrastructure.
Our greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement plan will reduce fugitive emissions by extracting gas from the coal seams and repurposing it to power the operations, boost gas supply for regional businesses and provide safer working environments underground.
The northern development sits entirely within Centurion’s existing mining leases.
Projected contribution from Centurion’s next stage of growth
Support 500+ ongoing jobs
Extends life of Centurion Mine by 25+ years
Contributes new gas supply
Contributes in royalties
Centurion Mine has completed the first step to support continued coal and gas extraction in the northern area by seeking approval to assess and safely drain gas in the proposed mining area. This early development work is critical to ensure underground areas are safe for proposed coal mining and to pave the way for the capture and reuse of coal seam gas for energy purposes.
Should approval for early development work be granted, Centurion will then seek approval for northern coal mining activities by completing a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for submission to State and Federal governments. All approvals for Centurion will undergo rigorous and independent assessment including public consultation to ensure community has its say.
Centurion’s coal is sourced from the Goonyella Middle Seam – one of the highest-grade steelmaking coals in the world. Its very high strength makes it highly productive for blast furnace steelmaking. The coal’s low ash, low sulphur and low phosphorus content helps steel mills meet stricter environmental standards while reducing the amount of carbon required in the steelmaking process.

The northern extension will enable Centurion Mine to continue supplying high-quality steelmaking coal for another 25+ years. This supports global steel production for product we rely on every day while securing jobs, royalties for Queensland and investment in regional communities.
Our greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement plan will reduce fugitive emissions by extracting coal seam gas before and during mining. The methane will be repurposed for more sustainable uses, including powering our operations and boosting regional gas supply.
Before any coal seam gas (CSG) extraction or mining begins, groundwater models developed by experienced technical consultants are used to forecast and monitor potential impacts, ensuring that water movement and quality impacts are fully understood. Wells will be securely sealed to maintain the natural separation of underground water layers, and strict environmental controls will be in place to safeguard local water quality.
During the mining process we manage risks to groundwater by carefully modelling and monitoring changes to the aquifers and groundwater dependent ecosystems. Groundwater that is brought to the surface by the mining process is contained and managed within the mine surface water system where it is reused or released only in accordance with approved environmental conditions.
Mining in the current area will continue until the late 2020s before transitioning to the northern operations.
Yes. All approvals for Centurion will undergo rigorous and independent assessment, including public consultation to ensure the community has its say.
The mine extension will support more than 500 ongoing jobs, pay $5.8 billion in royalties to the Queensland Government and underpin further investment with suppliers and the Central Queensland community. The project also reinforces the Bowen Basin’s global reputation for high-quality steelmaking coal beyond 2050.
