Sustainability

Centurion Mine is committed to protecting the environmental values of the region, with comprehensive plans to minimise impacts, reduce fugitive emissions and create safer underground workplaces.

Monitoring the impact of our activities

Centurion is committed to responsible and sustainable practices, continually working to meet strict environmental and regulatory standards.

Our team of experienced environmental specialists develop and implement comprehensive plans to minimise impacts on the environment.

Groundwater

Centurion is committed to protecting the region’s groundwater resources through careful planning, predictive modelling and responsible water management. Before any coal seam gas (CSG) extraction or mining begins, groundwater models developed by experienced technical consultants are used to forecast and monitor potential impacts, ensuring that water movement and quality impacts are fully understood.

Wells will be securely sealed to maintain the natural separation of underground water layers, and strict environmental controls will be in place to safeguard local water quality.

During the mining process we manage risks to groundwater by carefully modelling and monitoring changes to the aquifers and groundwater dependent ecosystems. Groundwater that is brought to the surface by the mining process is contained and managed within the mine surface water system where it is reused or released only in accordance with approved environmental conditions.

Gas Power Station groundworks commenced

Emissions reduction and energy recovery

Our greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement plan will extract coal seam gas ahead of mining to safely manage gas levels and reduce fugitive emissions that would otherwise be released during operations.

The captured gas will be processed on site to power the mine – reducing reliance on the electricity grid and converted into a commercial source of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to support regional businesses and local energy supply.

Gas Power Station

A 5 MW gas power station will convert mine waste gas to electricity, offsetting the local demand that would otherwise be met through long-distance transmission. The plant will begin with a 5 MW capacity and ramp up to 20 MW once stage two of construction is complete. It will also create ongoing jobs once operational.

Micro LNG plant

A micro-LNG plant will be constructed on site, with captured coal seam gas piped directly into the facility. The gas will be converted into LNG and transported by truck to end users increasing the supply of gas into the domestic market. This plant highlights Centurion’s commitment to investing in technology to support a lower carbon operation.

Cultural Heritage

We work closely with the Widi Aboriginal Corporation, Gangali Narra Widi Aboriginal Corporation and the Wiri People #3 as part of our ongoing cultural heritage partnership. We have co-designed and implemented a Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP), which ensures heritage management at site is undertaken jointly with our First Nations stakeholders.
